George Gabin- Artist Statement

IMAGES | STATEMENT | RESUME

George Gabin was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1931, has dedicated his life's work to the art of painting. In the 50's and 60's he set out on a path that cut against the current of the art world. While his contemporaries were transfixed by the Abstract Expressionist movement, Gabin was convinced of a more classical approach. His images depict emotion, mood, and the sensation of a moment. His use of color and subtle light is unique, giving his paintings a tranquil and many times solitary quality. The images are painted from the artists memory and imagination which takes the viewer out of the current world and into Gabin's, where the pace is slow and the mood is mesmerizing.

Gabin attended the Brooklyn Museum School and studied with Reginald Marsh and Ivan Olinsky at Art Students League in New York. He has taught at the New England School of Art & Design and was a professor for over 25 years at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA.

Gabin's work has been exhibited in several museums including the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA. and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford Connecticut. He has won a myriad of awards and participated in over thirty group and one man shows since 1963.
