Nathan Wilson received his BA from the University of Vermont in 1982 where he majored in English and Art. In 1984, Wilson moved to Maine where he studied with Neil Welliver and in 1986 he entered the BFA/MFA program at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In 1989, upon receiving his master's degree in Fine Arts, he moved to New York City and Truro, MA on Cape Cod. During this time, his work was largely influenced by the painters DeKooning, Mitchell, Deibenkorn and Rothko and was primarily of an abstract nature. Wilson began showing in Provincetown and rented a studio at the Fine Arts Work Center during the summers. From 1990-1991 he showed with UFO (Universal Fine Objects) Gallery in Provincetown, had a one-person exhibit in 1991, and was one in a group show titled "Five Young Painters" at the Provincetown Art Association & Museum. For the next three years he continued his exploration of minimalist abstract painting. In 1993, 1994 and 1995 Wilson was included in annual invitational shows at Blue Mountain Gallery in New York. During this time, feeling somewhat dissatisfied with the direction his abstract work was taking, he returned to his roots in representational painting, looking again at Welliver, Morandi, Cezanne and Inness.

Over the past five years, Wilson has continued in this vein, building his body of representational work. "I'm drawn to large expanses in nature. Yet at the same time, I'm fascinated by the intimacy of the still life. It's within this dichotomy that I concentrate. When I work from a still life, I work directly. In painting landscapes, I prefer to do studies from observation, using a variety of mediums, and then complete the work in my studio using oils."
